MILLER CLAIMS CAUTION FREE ‘SALUTE TO AMERICA’

By: John Wells

Jeremy Miller started third in the twenty-four car field, took the lead on the second lap and never looked back as he won the 48 lap feature for the Big 8 Late Models in a caution free event.

Brady Liddle and Wayne Freimund brought the field to the green flag with Liddle taking the early lead with Jeremy Miller and Dale Nottestad wasting no time to challenge.

Miller took the lead coming out of turn two on lap 2 with Liddle and Nottestad fighting it out for second as the three broke away from the pack. Two laps later Nottestad won his battle with Liddle for second with John Baumeister and Rich Schuman Jr. completing the top five. On lap 9 both Schuman Jr. and Michael Bilderback moved up a position when they overtook Baumeister.

Out front Miller was building up a sizeable advantage of nearly two seconds over the field. On lap 14 Bilderback worked past Schuman Jr. for third with Casey Johnson also moving into the top five. On lap 18 Bilderback took the third spot from Liddle with Johnson and Zack Riddle also powering their way past Liddle.

On lap 29 Bilderback was closing fast on Nottestad for second and took the spot away, but he still had a lot of ground to catch the leader. Two laps later, Johnson passed Nottestad for the third position.

Bilderback was doing his best to keep Miller in his sights, but with ten laps to go was nearly three seconds behind and hoping for a caution flag. Making matters worse for Bilderback was getting caught behind lapped traffic with eight laps to go allowing Miller to keep his advantage.

BILDERBACK GOES BACK-TO-BACK TO BEGIN BIG 8 SEASON

By: Skip Erickson

With six different leaders and an unforgettable finish, Friday night’s McGrathAuto.com “Clash at the Downs II” at Hawkeye Downs had a little something for everyone.

The ending of the 48 lap feature played like that old TV catchphrase “the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat.”

Young guns Caleb Adrian and Michael Bilderback fought hard for the win over the race’s final few laps, with Bilderback trying to start the season 2-for-2 in Big 8 competition, while Adrian was looking to become a repeat winner of “Clash at the Downs.” As the two drivers hustled through lap traffic and approached the white flag, contact was made between both, with each driver’s machines wiggling off the fourth turn. With Bilderback barley able to straighten his car up just enough, Adrian’s machine would not cooperate, sending the defending race winner backwards into turn one, where his Chevrolet backed into the outer retaining wall.

With the leaders taking the white flag, the race was scored complete. Bilderback gained the victory, his second Big 8 Series win to start 2016 and third Late Model victory of the season overall. Adrian, who lead off and on throughout the 48 lap race and was a contender for the win all evening, was credited with twelfth place in the final running order.

Griffin McGrath, who started the race from the tenth position, was credited with second place, while last year’s event runner-up J Herbst came home in third. Herbst, who lead during the middle stages of the 48 lapper, also set the new Big 8 Late Model Series track record in qualifying.

2012 Big 8 Series Rookie of the Year Jesse Bernhagen came home in fourth place, while veteran Mike Ehde rounded out the top five. Bernhagen and Ehde were among six drivers who battled for the fourth position over the course of the final 20 laps of the event. Jeremy Miller fought back from a slow start to garner a sixth place result, followed by Zach Less, a seventh place finisher in his first ever Big 8 Series start.

Teenagers Brody Willett and Grant Greisbach finished eighth and ninth. The ninth place for Greisbach was his third career Big 8 Series top-ten finish. Elkhorn Wisconsin’s Wayne Freimund picked up the Powersource ‘Power Mover of the Race’ Award, advancing 12 positions from his starting spot outside of row eleven to a tenth place finish.

Preliminary race winners included Ehde and Willett, along with Jerry Mueller and Jared Duda. Twenty-seven Big 8 Series Late Models made the trip to the legendary half-mile oval in eastern Iowa.

BILDERBACK SHINES AT SPRING CLASSIC!

Stan Kalwasinski photo

By: Eric Huenefeld

Reigning Big 8 Late Model Series champion Michael Bilderback began his title defense in commanding fashion on Sunday afternoon at Rockford Speedway.

The 24 year old from South Beloit began the day by setting the new Big 8 Series Track Record in Qualifying and ended the day in victory lane as the winner of the 39th Annual Spring Classic, becoming just the seventh man to win the event multiple times.

Bilderback’s road to the front began from fifth position while former Spring Classic winner Dale Nottestad and former Rockford Speedway Rookie of the Year Mitch Garfield led the field of 24 Big 8 Late Models to green for the 88 lap showdown. As the race took flight, it was Garfield who held the early advantage over Nottestad by a matter of a few feet, but on the fourth lap, Nottestad was able to slip ahead of Garfield for the lead. Soon after, Nottestad assumed the lead for himself, with two-time Big 8 Series champion Casey Johnson hot on his trail.

Nottestad and Johnson then raced away from the field, while Bilderback forged ahead to third. As the race wore on, Bilderback began to work over Johnson for the runner up spot. However, the battle never really materialized as Johnson’s car suddenly slowed, bringing out a caution flag and ending his day. With Johnson’s exit at lap 30, it set up a race at the front between Nottestad and Bilderback. Over the course of the next 23 laps, the two racers bobbed and weaved through lap traffic, with Bilderback able to get beside Nottestad at lap 50. After three laps of close-quarters racing, Bilderback steamed ahead of Nottestad for good on the 54th lap.

Bilderback was never seriously challenged again, although three yellow flags in the race’s final 18 laps made things interesting and shook up the rest of the running order. Many top contenders, including Garfield, reigning Rockford Speedway champion Jake Gille and Kyle Shear, fell out of the event over the final 25 laps with varying mechanical woes. When the checkered flag flew, it was Bilderback winning his fourth career Big 8 Series main event, with Nottestad finishing in a distant second. Rich Schumann Jr made big moves over the race’s final 25 laps, advancing from seventh to third in that time frame. Schumann’s podium finish was his best ever showing at Rockford.

Wayne Freimund collected his third career Big 8 Series top five, running as high as third before coming home with a fourth place effort. Jon Reynolds Jr, who started the race in 15th position, was awarded fifth place. Wonder Lake Illinois driver Denny Norton Jr collected the $100 Powersource ‘Power Mover of the Race’ by virtue of advancing from his 23rd starting spot to an 8th place finish.

In other action Sunday, Hampshire’s Jeremy Bloomberg held off the red-hot advances of Bill Prietzel to collect the victory in the 50 lap Mid-American Stock Car Series event. Bloomberg started on the front row and survived a wild race that saw numerous leaders fall out of contention with mechanical woes.

Chester Ace of Oregon Wisconsin was the overall winner of the American Ethanol Super Truck Series Twin 20 lap features, winning one feature and finishing second in the other. Johnsburg’s Ken Calhoun, who also finished third in the Mid-American race, won his first ever feature race in the opening 20 lap Super Truck race.

BILDERBACK BAGS BIG 8 CHAMPIONSHIP, JOHNSON AWARDED LACROSSE VICTORY

By: Eric Huenefeld
With the heartbreak of finishing one point shy of the 2008 Big 8 Late Model Series championship still fresh in his mind, Michael Bilderback was on a mission Saturday at the LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway.

Armed with confidence after a dominant performance the week prior at Rockford Speedway, along with a 55 point cushion on his nearest pursuer, Bilderback left no doubt at the 46th Oktoberfest Race Weekend, qualifying 3rd fastest out of a season-high 45 qualifiers and later racing from a tenth starting spot to a second place finish in the 68 lap Big 8 Series Championship Feature.

Bilderback, along with two-time Series champion Casey Johnson, worked through the field together from their fifth-row starting spots, finding the top five very early in the event. The 28-car starting field clicked off 53 consecutive laps of green flag racing before the first of three caution flags flew in the race’s final 15 laps. Throughout the final 15 circuits, Johnson and Bilderback, along with fast qualifier Ty Majeski, challenged race-long leader J Herbst. Despite their best attempts, neither driver could break free to challenge Herbst, who seemed to collect his first Big 8 Series win. However, Herbst’s win was disallowed after his race car failed Post Race Inspection.

The post-race shake up awarded the win to Johnson, giving the three-time Jefferson Speedway champion his ninth career Big 8 Series win and his first conquest on the tour in just three starts this season. Bilderback ended up moving into the second position, while Majeski, who competed in his first Big 8 event since 2011, was credited with third. Tim Sargent and Rich Schumann Jr finished the 68 laps in fourth and fifth respectively.

Bilderback’s final margin of victory in the 2015 Big 8 point standings was 105 points over his nearest competitor Austin Nason. The final day of the season was the toughest for Nason, who experienced issues with his vehicle during final practice, which forced him to jump into Jeremy Miller’s machine for the rest of the night. With no laps prior to qualifying aboard Miller’s mount, Nason qualified in the top ten, but found fewer successes after that and ended the 68 lap race in 16th place, his worst finish of the 2015 season.

In his championship run, Bilderback finished no worse than sixth in any Big 8 race during the 2015 season and through eight races sported an amazing average finish of third place. Along with six wins at his home track Rockford Speedway, Bilderback was a two-time Big 8 winner in 2015, with a memorable sideways slide to win at Wausau ahead of Herbst and the aforementioned dominant win at Rockford during the 50th Anniversary National Short Track Championships.

Nason was the only other driver besides Bilderback to win multiple times on the 2015 tour, collecting his wins at Madison in late June and at Elko in September. Despite the rough final day of the season, Nason still ended up second in the final points rundown, 32 markers ahead of Bobby Wilberg, who won the first race of the season in April at Rockford. Wilberg passed more cars than anyone in the 68 lap feature at LaCrosse, starting the race from 25th position and finishing in ninth.

Iowa State University freshman and Minnesota native Michael Ostdiek made an impressive late-season push to fourth in the Big 8 Late Model Series standings. Ostdiek, a three-time feature winner at Elko Speedway this summer, collected his first three Big 8 Series top-fives this season at Madison, Kaukauna and Elko. Fellow Minnesotan Cole Anderson not only finished the season fifth in Big 8 Series standings, but also won the 2015 Big 8 Late Model Series Rookie of the Year Award. Anderson edged out Wayne Freimund for fifth place in the Big 8 standings by just a single point.

The Big 8 Late Model Series now looks forward to it’s twelfth season in 2016, which again opens at Rockford Speedway in April as part of the 39th Annual Spring Classic. The preliminary 2016 Big 8 Late Model Series schedule will be available around January 1st. ‘BILDERBACK BESTS BIG 8 BATTLE AT NSTC!

By: Eric Huenefeld

Coming into Rockford Speedway’s 50th Anniversary National Short Track Championships, the three drivers at the top of the Big 8 Late Model Series point standings were separated by just 32 points. Leaving Rockford Speedway on Saturday night, the story changed and one driver took ownership of the 2015 championship chase.

South Beloit’s Michael Bilderback had a dominant Saturday night at his home track, collecting fast time honors, then charging through the talent laden field on his way to collecting his second win of the Big 8 Late Model Series season and his first win at the National Short Track Championships.

Bilderback quickly worked his way to the front of the field, trailing only Casey Johnson for the lead by lap 25. Over the course of the next 30 laps, Johnson and Bilderback set a blistering pace at the head of the class, with the three-time Jefferson Speedway champion Johnson holding off Bilderback at nearly every corner. Finally, as the race neared halfway, Bilderback was able to work his machine to the inside of Johnson and made the move for the top spot. Once Bilderback positioned his vehicle at the front of the field, he was rarely challenged again.

Following Bilderback’s winning pass, the race saw it’s longest green flag run at nearly 50 laps. In the process, drivers like J Herbst and Alex Papini made their trek towards the top five. Herbst, who started 15th after racing his way into the 108 lap feature via a qualifying race, climbed as high as third, while Papini, who was involved in an early race incident in the third corner, raced from the back of the field to end up in third.

When the checkered flag flew, it was Bilderback who held off all comers in a five-lap sprint to the finish following a late-race yellow flag. Johnson held on to second place while Papini scratched ahead of Herbst for the third position on the last lap. Four-time Big 8 Series champion Jeremy Miller made his first series start of 2015 and came home in fifth.

Bilderback put plenty of daylight between himself and his nearest competition in the Big 8 Late Model Series point standings with just one more race to go in the 2015 season. Austin Nason, who came into the race second in points, just 20 off of Bilderback back’s lead, fell back late in the 108 lap race and settled for seventh in the final order, while Bobby Wilberg, who entered the race in third place in the standings, fell out of the race and was scored 19th in the final rundown.

In other action Saturday night…

Oak Creek Wisconsin’s Ryan Gutkneckt won a caution-free 50 lap Mid American Stock Car Series feature. The win was Gutkneckt’s first win in the Series and the first for his family at Rockford Speedway after over 20 years of trying. Former Rockford winners and former Mid-Am champions Lyle Nowak and Mark Pluer came home second and third, respectively.

Patrick Bruns topped off a dominant season in the Illini Racing Series Midgets, winning the 30 lap championship feature over his teammate Max Pozsgai. Bruns was officially crowned the IRS champion for the fourth time in his career while also winning his third NSTC crown.

Mendota’s Matt Ramer held off a furious charge from Pat ‘Hacksaw’ Heaney to win the 20 lap Vintage Racers of Illinois feature race.
