REYNOLDS OUTRUNS NOTTESTAD FOR MIS CHECKERS!

(From track and series reports)

Jon Reynolds Jr. won the 48 lap feature for the Big 8 Late Models on Salute to America Night at Madison International Speedway.

Jon Reynolds Jr. and Kevin Knuese paced the field of twenty-four to the green flag. Reynolds Jr. took the lead from the top with Dan Lensing, Dale Nottestad, and Bobby Wilberg up to second through fourth. Nottestad and Wilberg were both able to pass Lensing on lap 5 but were still eight lengths behind the leader. The caution flag came out on lap 8 when Chris Marek’s machine stopped on the backstretch.

Reynolds Jr. maintained the lead with Nottestad, Wilberg, Tim Sargent, and Knuese in pursuit before the caution flag came out on lap 8 when Brady Liddle’s car spun in turn three. Wilberg had mechanical issues and was forced to take his car to the pits ending his night.

The race stayed green for just one lap before Michael Clapper spun on the backstretch. On the restart Reynolds Jr. and Nottestad jumped ahead of the field followed by Sargent, Knuese, and Lensing. A spin in turn two brought out the caution flag on lap 14.

Reynolds Jr. and Nottestad once again put more than ten lengths between themselves and the field while Lensing and Sargent were fighting it out for third. By lap 25 Reynolds Jr. had built a five car length lead over Nottestad with Lensing a distant third followed by Knuese and Sargent. On lap 33 Reynolds Jr. had to slow to get around lapped traffic allowing Nottestad to cut into his lead. But two laps later the lead was back to seven car lengths and growing. On lap 42 Casey Johnson was up to fourth after passing Knuese.

Only a caution flag could slow down Reynolds Jr., but it didn’t happen tonight as he cruised to victory lane. Nottestad finished second followed by Lensing, Johnson, and Austin Nason.

“I’ve spent most of my life up here watching my dad and other people race…I just love this place. It’s cool winning here,” said Reynolds Jr. from victory lane.

J Herbst won the twelve lap last chance race with Michael Clapper, Dave Edwards, and Casey Strese also transferring.

Transferring to the feature from the qualifying races were Bill Baumeister and Casey Johnson from the first race and Steve Dobbratz and Mike Ehde from the second.

Jon Reynolds Jr. won the first six lap dash while Kevin Knuese took home the win in the second. Both races determined the starting fourteen in the feature.

Bobby Wilberg set fast time in qualifying with a lap of 18.930 (95.087 mph).

THROUGH RAIN, WIND AND LAPPED TRAFFIC, JOHNSON DELIVERS AT COLUMBUS

Casey Johnson fought through a rain delay, power outage, and lapped traffic to emerge victorious in the Big 8 Late Model Series presented by Gandrud Chevrolet feature event Memorial Day Monday at Columbus 151 Speedway.

After three aborted starts to the event and with more threatening weather on the way, the race got underway with an announced distance of thirty-nine laps instead of the scheduled seventy-eight laps, with another rain storm fast approaching. Pole sitter and Columbus regular Brady Liddle showed the way early in the event over teenager Brent Edmunds, making his third Big 8 Series start. As the race settled in, Liddle continued to lead Edmunds, with Johnson quickly making his way to the front.

With the advancing storms apparent, a sense of urgency was felt by all competitors. Johnson especially felt this urgency, working inside of Edmunds for the second spot. As Johnson advanced through the field, Austin Nason followed the defending Big 8 Series champion through traffic. As Johnson advanced to second, Nason grabbed third. Only a few laps later, Johnson used the traffic to grab the lead from Liddle. As Johnson moved to the lead, Nason followed Johnson and assumed second place, dropping Liddle to third. Nason worked hard to find a way around Johnson, but lapped traffic worked in Johnson’s favor, as he was able to keep Nason at bay.

One final caution flew with four laps remaining, setting up a sprint to the finish. Johnson pulled away from the pack at the drop of the green, cruising to the victory. Nason matched his best ever Big 8 finish with a second place effort. Edmunds claimed third, his first podium finish in the Big 8 Series. Defending Dells Raceway Park champion Nick Nolden came home in fourth, with defending Jefferson Speedway Champion Dale Nottestad rounding out the top five.

TOP REGIONAL RACERS SET TO CONVERGE ON COLUMBUS THIS MONDAY!

By: Eric Huenefeld

It appears that the lengthy wait to get the 2014 season underway for the Big 8 Late Model Series presented by Gandrud Chevrolet will be well worth it.

When the ‘Best Weekly Warriors in the County’ gather this Monday May 26 at Columbus (WI) 151 Speedway, a solid cast of racers from across the region are set to greet those in attendance.

Champions from tracks across the region along with former Big 8 Series champions are among the names who have entered their machines for the Memorial Day tilt. The field ranges from drivers who have experienced victory at the tight quarter mile facility, to drivers who have never even seen the bullring located northeast of Wisconsin’s capitol city.

Leading the charge are the two drivers who battled for last season’s Big 8 Series championship, Casey Johnson and Dale Nottestad. Johnson, the two-time Jefferson Speedway track champion, bested Nottestad for the 2014 Big 8 title by the smallest of margins in a thrilling finale at the Oktoberfest Race Weekend last October. Putting the heartbreak of 2013 in his rear view, Nottestad has started 2014 strong by winning a feature at Jefferson Speedway while also holding the track point lead. Nottestad does have a Big 8 podium finish to his credit at Columbus, taking third place in the series’ first ever race at the track in 2011.

Two top weekly racers and reigning track champions will race on the same track for the first time ever on Monday, as defending Dells Raceway Park champion Nick Nolden and defending Elko Speedway champion ‘Cruiser’ Chris Marek have both filed their entries for the holiday afternoon matinee. Nolden was dominant last season at Dells Raceway Park, picking up six feature wins on the way to his first ever track championship. Nolden has already started 2014 strong, winning one feature and setting a new Late Model track record. Marek was equally strong in 2013, winning four features at Elko en route to the track championship. Marek also closed 2013 winning two of the last three Big 8 Series races (Elko and LaCrosse) while also winning the ‘JMcK 63’ Invitational at Oktoberfest.

Other track or series champions who have thrown their hat in the ring for this Monday at Columbus include 2010 Rockford Speedway champion Tim Sargent, two-time Slinger Speedway champion and former Big 8 Series champion ‘Driver X’ Jon Reynolds Jr, former Dells Raceway Park champions Mike Ehde and ‘Rocketman’ Dan Lensing, two-time LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway champion J Herbst and former Slinger Super Speedway champion ‘Insane’ Wayne Freimund.

The racing youth movement will also be represented Monday at Columbus 151, as 2013 Big 8 Series Rookie of the Year Casey Strese and 2012 Big 8 Series Rookie of the Year Jesse Bernhagen have committed to the race. Bernhagen has tasted past success at the mighty quarter mile, finishing fourth in his rookie campaign two years ago. Also entered for the all-star event are Hubertus Wisconsin’s John DeAngelis Jr and Roscoe Illinois’ Austin Nason. Both DeAngelis and Nason have been busy early this 2014 season, competing in both Big 8 Late Model and Super Late Model races regionally.

To go along with the Late Model excitement, the Great Northern Sportsman Series (GNSS) opens their season at Columbus this Monday. The GNSS event at Columbus 151 marks the series’ first ever trip to the facility. Also appearing on the busy holiday afternoon card will be the four-cylinder ‘Bandit Blast’ and the Back Up Cars, a Columbus 151 Speedway staple.

Spectator gates open Monday at Noon, with time trials set to begin at 12:30 PM. Racing begins at 2 PM, with a full slate of preliminaries and feature races for the Big 8 Late Models, GNSS and Bandits plus the ‘wild n crazy’ Back Up Race . Adult general admission tickets are $15, Children ages 6-10 are $5 with kids ages 5 and under admitted free.

Columbus 151 Speedway is located northeast of Madison on US 151 at Exit 111 between Columbus and Sun Prairie. For more information on Columbus 151 Speedway, please visit www.columbus151.com or call 920-623-4393.

MONDAY MATINEE AWAITS BIG 8’S BEST AT COLUMBUS!

By: Eric Huenefeld

Following a rain out last month at Rockford Speedway, a bullring battle awaits the ‘Best Weekly Warriors in the Country’ this Monday afternoon.

The Big 8 Late Model Series presented by Gandrud Chevrolet officially kicks off its tenth anniversary season Memorial Day Monday May 26 at Columbus 151 Speedway, the tight quarter mile oval located northeast of Madison Wisconsin.

This season marks the fourth consecutive season the Big 8 Late Model Series has scheduled a stop in Columbus on Memorial Day Monday. Back in 2011, scorching weather and wild racing were the name of the game. When the dust settled on that inaugural 68 lap affair, four-time Big 8 champion Jeremy Miller held off eventual series champion Steve Rubeck for the victory.

In 2012, Miller was in line for another Columbus triumph. However, late race lap traffic hampered Miller’s chances, and opened the door for Ryan Carlson. Carlson completed a three wide pass for the lead with three laps to go, clearing both Miller and the lapped traffic, en route to his last Big 8 Series win to date.

Last season’s event was cancelled due to a day-long deluge on Memorial Day, making Monday’s return to Columbus a much anticipated return. A record number of entrants for the Columbus event include representatives from nine tracks throughout the Midwest. Twenty track and series championships are represented and drivers from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa all plan to converge on Columbus 151 Speedway Memorial Day Monday, looking to take top honors in the 78 lap feature event.

Along with the Late Model excitement, the Great Northern Sportsman Series (GNSS) opens their second season this Monday at Columbus.

APRIL SHOWERS BRING EARLY END TO SPRING CLASSIC

By: Eric Huenefeld

Due to persistent afternoon showers which set in just past halfway of the Mid-American Stock Car Series 50 lap feature event, the 37th Annual Spring Classic at Rockford Speedway was cut short Sunday afternoon.

Before the rains, Dixon’s Tim Hamburg was victorious in the 20 lap Tibor Machine Vintage Series feature while Franksville Wisconsin driver Jeff Holtz was declared the winner of the Mid-American Series race after 29 of 50 laps.

The showers washed away the 108 lap Big 8 Late Model Series feature event, which was the only remaining race on the day’s schedule. Due to the circumstances, the Big 8 Series feature race has been postponed and will not be rescheduled.

Pit Passes and Tickets from Sunday’s Spring Classic will be honored at one of the three following events:
Saturday April 19- 67th NASCAR Season Opener at Rockford Speedway
Saturday April 26- Mobil 1 Dollar Night at Rockford Speedway
-or-
Monday May 26- Big 8 Late Model Series Memorial Day Special at Columbus 151 Speedway
